I came up with the name Dytective for the game after a brainstorming session with my colleague Luz Rello in the summer of 2015 at the HCI Institute in Carnegie Mellon. After writing down a bunch of words relevant to the project on a piece of paper like (Dyslexia, game, fun, search, detection, Batman -because I always write down batman-, super hero,…) The idea was that the game detects dyslexia, and the kids could be playing the role of the detective, finding the right letter in a grid of distracting letters, trying to solve an error in a sentence. This is how I arrived at the name Detective, and because the main purpose of the game was Dyslexia detection, I added the letter ‘Y’ to the Dytective name.
